pronounced (ray-key), is the Japanese word for universal life force energy and is a healing therapy which utilizes the benefit obtained from this universal energy. Reiki was founded in the early 1900’s in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui, who dedicated his life to the study of hands-on healing methods. To practice Reiki, no special kind of faith or belief is required. It is used with the same success by people of many faiths as well as by followers of widely-differing philosophies. Reiki requires no specific setting or preparation; it can be used in a private treatment session as well as in a hospital environment, including out patient services, intensive-care units and all other patient settings.

How does it work?
Reiki practitioners receive instruction and Reiki attunements which raise and accelerate their energy flow. The practitioner provides a Reiki treatment by the gently “laying on of hands” with the intention of being of assistance to the person. The result is that the health giving life force energy becomes balanced in the person receiving the treatment.

What are the benefits?
Reiki complements and enhances all types of medical and psychological treatment. Patients have expressed a reduced level of stress, as well as a decrease in acute and chronic pain, both of which allow for a better quality of sleep. It promotes the release of emotions such as grief, anger and anxiety. It brings forth a feeling of clarity and well being. Reiki works to reduce negative side effects such as those from chemotherapy, surgery and other invasive procedures. Reiki is gentle and powerful. In its long history of use, it has aided in healing many illnesses and injuries. Every person responds differently to Reiki. The person receiving Reiki is not “healed” by the practitioner. The healing comes from the flow of life force energy through the Reiki practitioner.

What are the side effects?
There are no side effects or contraindications with Reiki. It is a noninvasive treatment and safe for people of all ages. Reiki can be done while a patient is lying, sitting or standing. No adjustment in clothing needs to be made since Reiki flows through all barriers.

What can I expect from a Reiki treatment?
The process is really quite simple. You will lie on a massage table for approximately 1 hour. (This time period can be adjusted according to need). The practitioner will place his or her hands on key positions on your body. During the treatment some people doze off because they are so relaxed. It is important to remember that you are in control at all times during the treatment and modesty is respected at all times.
